Colorado hunt conditions: what should I check before leaving?

Check an NWS point forecast, active alerts and nearby official snow-station readings before your Colorado hunt. Free, with no account required.

A unit center is a reference point, not conditions across the unit. Choose your camp or route coordinates for a more relevant forecast. Entered coordinates are not checked against unit boundaries.

Optional forecast point (decimal degrees)

Enter both coordinates, or leave both blank to use the unit reference point. Coordinates stay in your browser and are sent to NWS when you check.

Ready. Select a unit, then check conditions.

How should I read snow reports?

Nearby stations are listed by straight-line distance to your forecast point, with station elevation in feet. They may be outside the selected unit. Open the official readings and check the observation time and measured variable. Snow depth and snow water equivalent are different measurements. Missing readings do not mean zero snow. A station does not describe every slope or your walking conditions.

Does this tell me whether a road is open?

No. Check the relevant forest's Motor Vehicle Use Map for the road number, vehicle class and seasonal designation. Then check current forest orders and contact the ranger district about temporary closures and road conditions. A designation is not a report that the road is passable. For BLM, state or county roads, consult that road's responsible manager.

Where can I check drought?

U.S. Drought Monitor: Colorado publishes regional drought information. Check its map date; it does not establish whether a particular creek or spring has water.

What do these sources cover?

NWS API documentation describes point forecasts and alerts. Forecast elevation is the NWS forecast grid elevation, not a surveyed camp elevation. Weather can differ across elevations and terrain. This tool does not infer elk location, snow travel difficulty or road access from the forecast.
