The dusky grouse range maps
One map is published for this animal. "Show it" opens the hunting map with that range drawn.
| Range | What it is | Source | Mapped | Last changed | On the map |

| Year-round range | Where dusky grouse are mapped as living, at any time of year. | USGS range map | 7 areas | Show it |
U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Project, dusky grouse range map, cut to Colorado. It is drawn a whole watershed at a time, so it is broader than the maps Colorado Parks and Wildlife draws for other animals.
How to read a range map
- It is a broad area, not a sighting. The map shows the watersheds the bird is known to live in. It does not show where an animal is today.
- Weather, hunting pressure and the year all move animals.
- Being inside a mapped range gives no right to hunt the ground. Switch on land ownership and tap the spot for the owner on record.
- A range map shows where the animal lives, not where or when it may be hunted.</b> Some of these have a short season, or none in part of their range: check this year's small game brochure.
Nothing on this map promises an animal. It is the published record of where the animal generally lives, and the hunting is still yours to do.
Seasons and where to hunt
Season dates, bag limits and where dusky grouse may be hunted are on the dusky grouse season page. All of Colorado's small game seasons are listed, animal by animal, under Colorado small game. Walk-in fields and state wildlife areas are on the walk-in access map.
What is left off, on purpose
Only the range map is shown. That is part of our fair chase promise: published public maps of broad areas only, and never a hunter's own sightings.
Other small game and bird range maps
Wild turkey, Pheasant, Scaled quail, Bobwhite quail, White-tailed ptarmigan, Greater sage-grouse, Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, Greater prairie chicken, Abert's squirrel, Snowshoe hare, White-tailed jackrabbit. Big game: elk, mule deer.
The map shows the ground. A plan tells you where to go.
The map is free. A FilledTag hunt plan is the paid part: for your tag and where you drive from, one exact plan with a legal place to park, a camp, morning and evening spots and the walk between them, checked against land records.
