Colorado Archery Elk Hunt Planning: License to Practice
Plan a Colorado archery elk hunt around your license, legal bow setup, season overlap and tested shooting limits. Checked against CPW's 2026 rules.
Rules checked October 20, 2026, against CPW's 2026 brochure.
The regular 2026 archery elk season was September 2 through 30 and has ended. The regular muzzleloader season, September 12 through 20, overlapped it. For your next hunt, confirm your license area first, test the complete bow setup, then select travel dates with season overlap in mind. The dates here are historical references from CPW's 2026 Big Game brochure, printed page 35. For a future hunt, wait for that year's brochure before treating dates, hunt codes or equipment rules as settled.
Which license decision has to come before booking travel?
For nonresidents, OTC archery elk licenses are unavailable west of I-25 and in GMU 140. Certain eastern units retain nonresident OTC options. Check access before treating an eastern license as your fallback. CPW: nonresident archery elk licenses.
Resident status does not make every archery unit OTC either. Copy the valid units and restrictions from your exact license category in the 2026 brochure's archery maps and tables, printed pages 38, 39, 42 and 43.
| Your situation | Resolve this before spending on travel | What would make you change plans? |
|---|---|---|
| Nonresident planning a western archery hunt | Identify the limited license you would need and the current application process | You cannot obtain the license covering your intended area |
| Resident considering OTC archery | Match the intended unit and animal to the correct OTC map or limited table | The license category excludes your destination or intended animal |
| Considering an eastern OTC alternative | Establish permission and a usable route for the actual parcel | You have a license option but no confirmed place to hunt |
| Partners holding different licenses | Compare the full valid-unit lists, dates and restrictions | Your proposed shared camp does not serve areas each partner may hunt |
For the eligibility details, use which OTC elk licenses nonresidents can buy. Keep that separate from the next decision: whether the hunt fits the bowhunter.
What should you check on the bow before building a practice plan?
The 2026 rules require a minimum draw of 35 pounds and a broadhead at least 7/8 inch wide with two steel cutting edges. There is no let-off maximum. Use those minimums to check legality, then choose a setup you can shoot consistently. CPW 2026 brochure, printed page 14, Hand-Held Bows.
Use that section to check the complete bow and arrow, including attached devices. It prohibits scopes and most attached electronics, with stated exceptions for lighted nocks and qualifying recording devices. Ordinary archery seasons exclude crossbows; if you need an accommodation, resolve it with CPW before relying on one. CPW 2026 legal methods and crossbow rules, printed page 14.
Record the actual draw setting, arrow and broadhead used for practice. If you change the hunting broadhead or adjust the bow afterward, repeat the relevant checks. Check broadhead impact rather than relying on field-point groups.
How do you turn range practice into a trip decision?
Use practice to define shots you will decline. Do not borrow a universal elk range from an equipment label or another hunter.
Worked example: invented practice results, not recommended ranges or an elk performance estimate. Suppose a hunter records repeatable broadhead placement at 30 yards while standing, but cannot repeat it at 40 yards or while kneeling in the intended jacket.
| Observation in this example | Planning decision | What still needs testing? |
|---|---|---|
| Standing practice works at 30 yards | Retain that as a provisional practice limit | Repeatability with the complete hunting setup |
| Results deteriorate at 40 yards | Exclude that distance from the hunt plan | More practice does not automatically justify extending it |
| Jacket interferes while kneeling | Change the clothing or decline that position | Retest the revised setup before hunting |
| Proposed setup depends on a shot across a wide opening | Reject the setup unless a suitable closer opportunity exists | Actual distance, arrow clearance and a safe background |
Write down the positions, distances and conditions you have tested, plus what makes you pass. In the field, assess the animal, arrow path and background before considering distance.
How should season overlap affect your choice of week?
In the regular 2026 calendar, choosing dates outside September 12 through 20 avoided the regular muzzleloader elk window. Check other open seasons too; avoiding that window still leaves shared use of the woods. CPW 2026 season tables, printed pages 35 and 62.
CPW encourages archery hunters to wear fluorescent orange or pink during overlapping archery and muzzleloader seasons. That recommendation is distinct from the clothing requirement for muzzleloader hunters. CPW: hunter orange and pink.
Choose a week by what you can control: license validity, time to check access, your partners' schedules and time left for recovery and packing. Leave room to change daily plans instead of committing the trip to an expected calling response.
What belongs on the final archery trip sheet?
Write down the exact license restrictions, the bow setup you checked, your tested shooting conditions and the equipment problem that would stop the hunt. If transport may have disturbed the bow, check it after arrival at a location where shooting is allowed.
Then attach the logistics that let you act on a shot: your recovery contact, parcel permission contacts, meat destination and a route back to the vehicle. Use how to pack out an elk for extraction planning and how to read a Motor Vehicle Use Map for vehicle-route checks. Verify motorized retrieval permission separately from road proximity.
