Colorado GMU 79 elk hunting: 2024 harvest and hunter numbers

Unit 79 covers about 426 square miles in Alamosa, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties.

In 2024, an estimated 1,034 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 79 across all seasons and took 163 elk, a success rate of 16%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 102 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 12%.

1st rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 178 hunters, about 42 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

2nd rifle had the highest rifle success at 24%.

Among the 130 units with at least 100 rifle elk hunters, unit 79 ranked 78 for rifle success and 60 for fewest rifle hunters per square mile.
