First-Time Elk Hunter Rules Checklist, Colorado
A checklist of Colorado rifle elk rules first-timers get wrong. Orange, legal hours, rifle minimums, antler points, carcass tag and CWD testing.
This is a checklist of the rules a first-time rifle elk hunter in Colorado must not get wrong. Every item comes from the 2026 Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Big Game brochure. It is a summary. Confirm each rule in the current brochure before you hunt.
Before you leave home
- Hunter education card. Required if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1949. Carry it while hunting unless your license is marked with a "V".
- The physical license. The brochure says to carry it with you while hunting.
- Know what the license allows. You may hunt only the animal, sex, season, units and method of take authorized by the license.
- Do not sign the carcass tag early. It is illegal to sign or tear it before harvest.
Orange or pink
- Wear at least 500 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink.
- It must be on an outer garment above the waist.
- Add a fluorescent orange or pink hat or head covering, visible from all directions.
- Camouflage orange or pink does not qualify.
- Archery hunters who hunt during rifle seasons must wear it too.
Legal hunting hours
- One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
- The brochure's sunrise and sunset table is for Denver only.
Rifle and ammunition minimums
| Rule | Minimum for elk |
|---|---|
| Caliber | .24 caliber (6 mm), centerfire |
| Barrel | 16 inches |
| Overall length | 26 inches |
| Bullet | Expanding, at least 85 grains |
| Impact energy | 1,000 foot-pounds at 100 yards, as rated by the manufacturer |
| Semiautomatic capacity | No more than six rounds, magazine and chamber combined |
- Fully automatic rifles are prohibited.
Antler point restrictions
The brochure defines a bull as a male with antlers at least 5 inches long. In many units there is a second test.
- In the restricted units, a bull taken in any season must have four points or more on one antler, or a brow tine at least 5 inches long.
- An antler point is a projection at least 1 inch long and longer than the width of its base.
- Some units have no point restriction. The brochure lists them, and adds units east of I-25 except unit 140. In those, antlers must still be at least 5 inches long.
- The head or skull plate, with both antlers naturally attached, must accompany a bull's carcass in camp or in transit. This applies even when you use the scrotum or testicles as evidence of sex.
Find your unit in the brochure's antler point section on page 36 before you shoot. If you cannot count the points, do not take the shot.
Carcass tag
- Sign, date and detach the tag immediately after the kill. Not before.
- Attach it to the carcass. Not to the head, antlers or a detached hide.
- It must be attached before and during transport in any vehicle, and while in camp or storage.
- The tag stays on until the meat is processed, and stays with the meat until it is eaten.
Evidence of sex
- It is illegal to have or transport a big-game carcass without evidence of sex naturally attached.
- For a bull: the head with antlers attached to the carcass, or the testicle, scrotum or penis attached to the carcass.
- A head detached from the carcass is not adequate.
- If you quarter or debone, evidence must stay attached to a quarter or another major part. All portions must be transported together.
CWD testing
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing is new as a requirement for elk in 2026.
- Elk taken in a rifle season on selected hunt codes must have the head submitted to a CPW submission site.
- Mandatory testing is free.
- Not every hunt code in a unit was selected. Selected codes are shaded green in the brochure's rifle tables, pages 41 to 52.
- If you submit the head, leave other evidence of sex on the carcass.
Vehicles and firearms
- In or on a motor vehicle. No loaded chamber. This is on CPW's list of the ten most common violations.
- On an OHV. Firearms, except handguns, must be unloaded in the chamber and the magazine. Firearms and bows must be fully enclosed in a hard or soft case. Scabbards or cases with open ends or sides are prohibited.
- Roads. No shooting from or across a public road. You must be at least 50 feet from the centerline.
- No hunting from a vehicle. It is illegal to use a motor vehicle or OHV to hunt, chase or drive wildlife.
After the shot
- Follow up. You must make a reasonable attempt to track and kill an animal you shot at or may have wounded. That includes going to the spot where it stood.
- Private land. You need the landowner's permission to enter private land, even to retrieve an animal. Private land does not need to be posted or fenced.
- Take the meat. At a minimum, the four quarters, tenderloins and backstraps count as edible meat that must be cared for.
- No party hunting. You cannot fill someone else's tag, or let someone fill yours.
