Wind forecast for the spot you hunt, hour by hour
Tap any spot for the National Weather Service's hourly forecast there: wind direction and speed, temperature and the chance of rain or snow. Or pick an hour and see the forecast wind at every pin you have dropped.
What it shows
- The hourly forecast for any spot you tap: wind direction, wind speed, temperature and weather.
- The wind at each of your pins for an hour you choose, so you can see at a glance which of your spots the forecast wind suits.
- Active wildfires and the edges of past ones, under Fire.
How to use a forecast wind
- It is the wind over the country, not the wind in your drainage. A forecast is for a square of ground a mile or more across. In the mountains the air near the ground also runs downhill when it is cold and uphill when the sun warms a slope, and that can be the opposite of the forecast.
- Use it to choose between spots, the night before. If the forecast is from the west, the walk in from the east is the one that keeps your scent behind you.
- Then trust what you feel when you get there. A puff of powder or a lighter flame tells you more than any forecast.
The map does not say where an animal is or will be. It gives the forecast; the reading of it is yours.
Where it comes from
National Weather Service hourly forecast, asked for when you tap. The coordinates of the spot go to the Weather Service, rounded. Fires: National Interagency Fire Center.
The map shows the ground. A plan tells you where to go.
The map is free. A FilledTag hunt plan is the paid part: for your tag and where you drive from, one exact plan with a legal place to park, a camp, morning and evening spots and the walk between them, checked against land records.
