Unit 71 covers about 521 square miles in Dolores County and Montezum County counties.

In 2024, an estimated 2,529 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 71 across all seasons and took 467 elk, a success rate of 18%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 90 more hunters than 2023, when success was 17%.
