Rules for american crow
- Shotgun holding no more than three shells. A rifle is not legal for crows.
- Carry your hunter education card.
- Electronic calls are legal for crows in the crow season only.
- Keep one fully feathered wing or the head on each bird until you are home.
Do not mistake these for american crow
- Common raven (protected or closed: never shoot): Half again as large, with a long wedge-shaped tail, a heavy bill and a shaggy throat. It soars and croaks, and is usually alone or in a pair. A crow has a short squared tail and calls caw.
- Chihuahuan raven (protected or closed: never shoot): Crow-sized and in flocks on the south-east plains. There, do not shoot a black bird unless it calls caw and shows a short squared tail.
- Hawks and owls (protected or closed: never shoot): They come to crow calls and owl decoys. Never a target.
How to hunt american crow
- Find the evening flight line to the roost (tall cottonwoods along a river or in a town) and set up on it, well away from the roost itself.
- Call and decoy from a hide. Good camouflage and a face cover matter. A spot that has been shot goes quiet.
- Shooting hours end at sunset, so most of the roost flight is out of hours.
- Towns, farmsteads and roads are close to most crow country. Know what is behind the bird.
