Rules for eurasian collared-dove
- No hunting licence or Habitat Stamp is needed, but you must carry a hunter education card.
- Anyone 16 or older still needs a hunting or fishing licence, or a State Wildlife Area pass, to be on a State Wildlife Area or State Trust Land.
- Keep every collared-dove fully feathered in the field and in transport. From 1 September to 29 November a dressed one counts as one of the 15 mourning doves.
- From 1 September to 29 November, when mourning doves could be taken, use a shotgun plugged to three shells.
- Being paid to hunt them is not allowed.
Do not mistake these for eurasian collared-dove
- Mourning dove and white-winged dove (different season or permit): Mourning dove has a long pointed tail and is smaller and browner. White-winged dove has a white patch across the wing. Both are legal only 1 September to 29 November, with a licence and a limit of 15.
- American kestrel and other hawks and falcons (protected or closed: never shoot): Sits upright on a wire with a big head, or hovers. A dove never hovers.
- Band-tailed pigeon (different season or permit): Much bigger, in mountain forest. Open only 1 to 14 September with its own permit.
How to hunt eurasian collared-dove
- The birds live around buildings, feedlots and grain elevators, on poles, wires and big yard trees. They coo all day.
- Never shoot toward buildings, stock or machinery.
