Rules for sora and virginia rail
- Shotgun holding no more than three shells. Rifles and pistols are not legal for migratory birds.
- Carry your hunter education card.
- Keep one fully feathered wing or the head on each bird until you are home.
- The state rule does not require non-toxic shot for rails, but a property may, and you may not carry lead while also hunting ducks. Use non-toxic shot in wetlands.
Do not mistake these for sora and virginia rail
- Yellow rail and black rail (protected or closed: never shoot): Tiny and rare. A yellow rail shows white wing patches in flight; a black rail is sparrow-sized and dark. If it is tiny, leave it.
- Marsh wrens, blackbirds, sparrows and small shorebirds (protected or closed: never shoot): Songbirds perch on stems; shorebirds fly strongly in flocks over open mud. A rail flushes weakly and drops back into the cover.
- American coot (different season or permit): Much larger, all dark, white bill, patters across the water. It falls under the waterfowl rules, with non-toxic shot.
- Wilson's snipe (different season or permit): Fast zigzag flight, very long straight bill, harsh call. Its own limit of 8.
How to hunt sora and virginia rail
- Walk the shallow edge of cattail and sedge marsh, or the wet weedy margin of a drawn-down pond. A close-working dog helps.
- Shots are close at a slow bird. Let it get out before you shoot.
- The bird flies at head height over the stems. Never shoot at a bird below the reed tops with anyone, or a dog, ahead of you.
- Go straight to the fall. A wounded rail runs. Deep silt and hidden channels are a drowning hazard in waders.

- The planner cannot see water depth. Rails want standing water under about 6 inches.
- State Wildlife Areas with marsh often have waterfowl closures or reservation rules. National wildlife refuges are closed unless they say they are open, and are not in the planner.
