Colorado GMU 12 elk hunting: 2024 harvest and hunter numbers

Unit 12 covers about 493 square miles in Moffat, Routt and Rio Blanco counties.

In 2024, an estimated 2,634 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 12 across all seasons and took 755 elk, a success rate of 29%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 383 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 22%.

1st rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 783 hunters, about 159 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

2nd rifle had the highest rifle success at 33%.

Among the 130 units with at least 100 rifle elk hunters, unit 12 ranked 38 for rifle success and 116 for fewest rifle hunters per square mile.
