Unit 231 covers about 178 square miles in Routt, Rio Blanco and Garfield counties.

In 2024, an estimated 1,497 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 231 across all seasons and took 211 elk, a success rate of 14%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 270 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 13%.

2nd rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 300 hunters, about 169 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

4th rifle had the highest rifle success at 24%.
