Unit 49 covers about 538 square miles in Lake, Park and Chaffee counties.

In 2024, an estimated 971 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 49 across all seasons and took 378 elk, a success rate of 39%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 10 more hunters than 2023, when success was 36%.

2nd rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 228 hunters, about 42 for every 100 square miles of the unit.
