Colorado GMU 85 elk hunting: 2024 harvest and hunter numbers

Unit 85 covers about 1,174 square miles in Huerfano and Las Animas counties.

In 2024, an estimated 2,875 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 85 across all seasons and took 614 elk, a success rate of 21%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 56 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 18%.

2nd rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 605 hunters, about 52 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

1st rifle had the highest rifle success at 36%.

Among the 130 units with at least 100 rifle elk hunters, unit 85 ranked 59 for rifle success and 53 for fewest rifle hunters per square mile.
