Unit 86 covers about 496 square miles in Fremont, Custer and Chaffee counties.

In 2024, an estimated 1,934 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 86 across all seasons and took 292 elk, a success rate of 15%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 207 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 12%.

2nd rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 461 hunters, about 93 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

1st rifle had the highest rifle success at 16%.
