Colorado GMU 77 elk hunting: 2024 harvest and hunter numbers

Unit 77 covers about 557 square miles in Archuleta, Hinsdale, La Plata and Mineral counties.

In 2024, an estimated 3,299 elk hunters hunted Game Management Unit 77 across all seasons and took 683 elk, a success rate of 21%. The statewide rate that year was 20%.

That is 138 fewer hunters than 2023, when success was 12%.

2nd rifle was the busiest rifle season, with 1,057 hunters, about 190 for every 100 square miles of the unit.

3rd rifle had the highest rifle success at 28%.

Among the 130 units with at least 100 rifle elk hunters, unit 77 ranked 61 for rifle success and 121 for fewest rifle hunters per square mile.
